Kayaking in Bohol - Day 3 & 4

Day 3

Today's kayaking distance was a good 28km. From Duljo Point we turned anti-clockwise around Panglao Island, crossed the channel to Bohol island and ended at Punta Cruz, southwestern part of Bohol. That's not the end, there's another 4km of river kayaking to watch fireflies at night.

The coast was mainly cliffs, you can see the obvious effects of wave erosion. This could be a geography trip!

Water was clear and turquoise as always. With all the pollution problems in the world, I wonder if the water here can remain unaffected forever.

A picture of a starfish taken from my kayak. Again, I emphasise that the water is very clear.

The highlight of the journey was the impromptu cliff jump. It was about 4-5m high, jump off and splash into the cool seawater below. Don't think you can ever do that in Singapore, there aren't cliffs high enough, water deep enough....and if you try in a swimming pool diving platform, the lifeguards will stop you before you can even climb up the stairs.

There was this amazing resort that had a swimming pool (seawater) that was not far from the coast. This is such a smart concept, using the seawater as the pool water, no need for swimming pool water and chlorine. Anyway the seawater in Philippines is clean and clear enough. And the pool will refill itself during high tide. Leave everything to Mother Nature. Thumbs up!

Lunch point. Another beautiful beach.

After the crossing to Bohol main island, we went past a stretch of mangroves. Mangroves give me a familiar Singapore feel, as if I am back to Pulau Ubin. Didn't see any creatures though, just mangroves after mangroves. Wanted to manoeuvre among the mangroves but the tide was too low and water too shallow. I'll be back a few days later.

By now the sun was beating down on us. Bohol in June could be very hot or rainy, much like Singapore. A 20min nap on the kayaks helped, but I was more concerned with kayaks drifting away.

And then....it rained! Suddenly. From the heat of the blazing sun we were suddenly washed down with rainwater. Refreshing, although I developed a flu after that from the sudden change in temperature. There was a rainbow to complement the rain.

My favourite picture. Courtesy of Chow Wee.

The last part of the journey was a 4km upstream paddle along Abatan River, where we were given a guided tour of the fireflies. By then it was about 11hrs in the water and everyone was dead tired, we just wanted to end the day.

Day 4

Rest. Much needed.
